It may be, as Anthony Lioi says in his erudite analysis of Laputa as a вЂњcritical ecotopia,вЂќ that Laputa is вЂњthe carrier of an eschatological promise.вЂќ But the tree would never have taken flight without humans embedding the volucite crystal within it. ItвЂ™s clear that, freed from the yoke of humanity, the gargantuan tree at the heart of Laputa can soar. It is in response to his extremity that Laputa is consigned to the heavens, beyond humanityвЂ™s reach indefinitely.ДЄs the castle collapses at the filmвЂ™s end, the remains of Laputa float ever higher a striking image whose meaning remains elusive. They know that volucite has benign, even beneficial uses as surely as it has destructive ones, but they immediately decide to destroy Laputa rather than allow it to be wielded as a weapon.Д¬olonel Muska is a monster with no compunctions about shooting and abusing children, to say nothing of massacring his own men and harnessing the power of Laputa for his own genocidal ends. Upon seeing this, Pazu and Sheeta do not deliberate. When the eminently hateable Colonel Muska (one of MiyazakiвЂ™s least ambiguous villains) demonstrates LaputaвЂ™s power, the explosion bears the unmistakable shape of an atomic cloud. Those ends include flight, but also, as is revealed at the filmвЂ™s climax, annihilation. Volucite is an unobtanium-style magic material, and we donвЂ™t learn much about it except that its power was inevitably harnessed by humans for their own ends. ItвЂ™s possible that the Laputian robots are powered by internal crystals of their own, given that they respond to and protect Sheeta, or are somehow tethered to the crystal embedded within Laputa. Laputa is held aloft by a giant вЂњvoluciteвЂќ crystal, a larger chunk of the same stuff in the amulet strung around SheetaвЂ™s neck. We learn little of LaputaвЂ™s inhabitants except that at some point, long ago, they voluntarily abandoned the city to live on earth. Laputa is an abandoned city wrapped around a massive tree, the grand ruins reclaimed by nature and tended to by tireless mechanical guardians. Nature in Castle in the Sky is much simpler its purity is corrupted by human influence.

The rich ecological overtones of Princess Mononoke, perhaps MiyazakiвЂ™s magnum opus in this regard, were adeptly parsed by Ian Martin in the Japan Times вЂњMiyazaki isnвЂ™t sentimental about natureвЂ¦ the forest in Princess Mononoke is as much a place of darkness as it is of beauty.вЂќ

Miyazaki is one of cinemaвЂ™s great environmentalists: in the illustrative opening of NausicaГ¤ of the Valley of the Wind, NausicaГ¤ takes great care to reroute a runaway giant centipede back to its territory using harmless flashbang grenades and a lulling flute. But most of Castle in the Sky is a straightforward adventure tale Miyazaki leaves the explicit allusions for the climax. The film takes a hard stance against atomic power, which may come as a surprise to anyone expecting the meticulously nuanced ethical quandaries of Princess Mononoke. MiyazakiвЂ™s peculiar narrative sense leavens the heavy thematic material of Castle in the Sky.

The same can be said for KikiвЂ™s Delivery Service, the most fascinatingly quotidian of MiyazakiвЂ™s films it is content to follow Kiki as she ekes out an everyday existence, with all the detours and curlicues of life intact. The plot of My Neighbor Totoro unfolds like a run-on sentence, as if the narrative is chasing after the characters. ItвЂ™s unclear whether this process is the same with all of GhibliвЂ™s directors, but itвЂ™s evident in the stream-of-consciousness quality of MiyazakiвЂ™s stories. GhibliвЂ™s stable of artists begins work on MiyazakiвЂ™s films before he finishes the storyboards thus, the plot and the visuals end up shaping each other into a headlong rush of motion. ItвЂ™s possible to ascribe the filmвЂ™s shape to the way Miyazaki works with his collaborators.
